VISUAL GUIDE 2 / 3

As children grow, the adult’s role changes

0–5 yearsParticipate and guide

Consider content, shared use, calming routines and developmental needs. This is not a myopia-safe minute allowance.

6–12 yearsExplain and plan together

Separate required tasks, accessible communication and recreation. Make transitions predictable and alternatives feasible.

13–18 yearsCollaborate and revisit

Protect sleep and responsibilities while discussing privacy, platform design and what makes stopping difficult.

Based on the AAP’s 2026 public guidance. Age bands organize a conversation; individual development, disability and family circumstances still matter.Sources: [1] [2] · Open or save this visual ↗
